The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the great cats in the cat family and a species of leopard. Listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List since 1996, populations of this species in Africa have declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Although the causes of the decline are not fully understood, habitat loss and conflict with humans are the biggest causes.
